Data acquisition in real time: A new generation of engine test stands using HBM measurement technology

After two years of intensive preparation and decision making the curtain has finally been raised: The BMW Group has selected HBM’s QuantumX for data acquisition in their new engine, gearbox and power train test stands.

After two years of intensive preparation and decision making the curtain has finally been raised: The BMW Group has selected HBM’s QuantumX for data acquisition in their new engine, gearbox and power train test stands.

Currently at the BMW Group Research and Innovation Center in Munich a number of new test stands are under development, in which the QuantumX data acquisition system will comprise the central measurement equipment. In these test stands QuantumX will perform data acquisition in real-time from more than 6,000 transducers with the most widely varying measurement principles.

The BMW Group’s new test stands feature real-time communication via EtherCAT. The high demands for speed of data transmission are fulfilled by QuantumX’s EtherCAT and Firewire interfaces. QuantumX facilitates the transmission of measurement data to the automation system in real time – including even the synchronous measurement of highly dynamic sequences.

QuantumX’s flexibility also provides benefits for test stands: Using “Advanced Plug and Measure“ (APM), QuantumX’s universal connectors support almost all transducer technologies – irrespective of the combination in which they are used. Thanks to its compact size QuantumX can be integrated into test stands even where space is limited.
