Snag protection: Safety for harbor cranes with HBM measurement chain
Speed and economy are counterpoints to safety in load systems. Heavy electric motors are used as drives with safety brakes and safety couplings that have reaction times of less than one millisecond.
The SOS Snag Overload System is the first non-hydraulically actuated overload device for container cranes. By combining the SOS with integrated safety monitoring from HBM improved interaction can be gained with safety-oriented control systems, giving significantly better reaction time and reliability than hydraulic systems.
Lower cable forces occur than in hydraulic protection systems meaning the entire system can be made lighter, less expensive and requiring less maintenance.
The braking system guarantees, in the case of error, an overload protection below 100 milliseconds. These reaction times cannot be reached with conventional hydraulically-operated systems.
Sensors for determining lifting load
HBM measures value acquisition and process monitoring using special load pins to record the tensile forces of the lifting cables at the end of the extension and transmits these to a digiCLIP DR31DP amplifier as an electrical signal.
