Determining the efficiency of milling heads
HBM measurement technology helps to increase the efficiency of milling heads. Milling cutters are used in mining sites and quarries for working stone.
Bechem GmbH, Germany, uses a test bench to determine the efficiency of milling heads. The results of these tests enable the efficiency of the milling heads to be further increased.
The test bench comprises a permanently mounted milling head and a mobile carriage. Stone is permanently mounted on the carriage. The carriage (with stone) drives past the milling head. The following transducers are used:
- U2B force transducers: The table onto which the stone has been mounted is suspended by cardan joints using the knuckle eyes of the U2B force transducers. This allows three-dimensional force measurement in the directions X, Y, and Z (see figures). U2B force transducers are especially well suited to this application because of their high stiffness.
- Pressure, rotational speed, displacement: A cable transducer measures the travel of the carriage. It is driven by a hydro-motor whose pressure and rotational speed are measured.
- HBM’s Spider8 PC measurement electronics and catman®Professional software are used for acquiring, computing, and visualizing the test results.
In spite of the milling head test bench’s special requirements, standard components ensure reliable test results. HBM provides all the components for the complete measurement chain – from transducer to software (except for the incremental encoder and the cable transducer).
