The base of a pillar supporting a bridge forming part of the Gotthard motorway was eroded by extreme flooding in August 1987. The pillar sank about 1 m (3.3 ft) and was displaced sideways.
Although the roadway dipped and cracks had developed in the bridge box girder, it was decided to repair the bridge without demolishing the girder. The pillar was provided with a new foundation and the bridge was lifted into place with hydraulic presses. The article explains measurements made on the bridge during the lifting process.
