Monitoring the Reichenbach and Albrechtsgraben viaducts
Normally, road bridges are visually inspected at regular intervals, in order to detect any defects and/or to decide whether additional rehabilitation might become necessary.
Normally, road bridges are visually inspected at regular intervals, in order to detect any defects and/or to decide whether additional rehabilitation might become necessary. The monitoring system proposed below should be regarded as supplementary to such inspections since it offers the opportunity to consider specifi c damaging effects separately, as well as provide permanent surveillance.
The aim of such a system is to determine the type, frequency and magnitude of the actual stress that is experienced. By gaining information about the stress exerted on a bridge under examination, it is possible to compare the computer model with reality. Bridge fatigue and ageing, caused by sudden heavy loading when heavy trucks pass across, are additional aspects in determining the actual loading (Falkner [1], Naumann [2]).
