Displacement measurements on a Middle Age manuscript and their correlation with resulting surface damage
This article describes the examination that was carried out involving displacement and acceleration measurements.
The transport of middle-age manuscripts, which are often adorned with gold lettering and painted in pigments, is extremely difficult due to changes in ambient conditions and particularly on account of the unavoidable vibrations that arise.
Therefore, when the Codex aureus, a priceless decorated manuscript dating from the 9th century A.D., was to be taken from the Bavarian State Library to an exhibition at the Diocesan Museum in Regensburg, the Technical Control Board was first consulted about the risks to the manuscript during its transport.
