The strain gage, the measuring element which is widely used with great success in the most varied fields of application, is 50 years old this year. The author takes the opportunity to look back on the history of the strain gage, its invention and the long period of work in various countries which led up to it.
Developments in Germany are then described, including the start of strain gage production at Darmstadt 33 years ago, as well as the progression from the early wire strain gages to modern, innovative technology such as thin-film and laminated techniques. lt is apparent from the article that even after 50 years the strain gage is still developing with youthful vigor.
