Overfill Protection: Reliably Determining Fill Quantities

The permissible deviation of a quantity actually contained in a package from the specified quantity is regulated by law worldwide. At the same time, too generous a filling reduces profit. Food producers therefore attempt to optimize the quantity of the filled product as much as possible within the current regulatory framework. Reliable control of the fill quantity is thus indispensable. Fill quantity control using weighing equipment is often clearly superior to common methods such as level or flow measurement.

Flow measurement methods or the use of different types of fill level sensors are established methods for determining fill quantities. The principle of gravimetric filling is superior, however, especially when high accuracy is essential or when it comes to filling products that are sensitive to microbial contamination. . Tolerances in container volume and different physical properties of the product (proportion of particles, viscosity, and conductivity) do not affect the filling result. Weight-controlled filling provides optimum hygienic conditions and also reduces the proportion of foreign particles, since the sensor does not come into contact with the food or product.

Overfill Protection

Weighing technology enablesfill quantities to be quickly and correctly determinedregardless of the product or type of packaging used. Weight-based fill quantity control guarantees both compliance with legal regulations and maximum cost-effectiveness. This is because the method ensures that only the minimum specified product quantity is filled. Expensive overfill is thus prevented. This is ideal in particular when high-grade products such as olive oil, cosmetics products, ice cream, or spirits are packaged.

Weighing Equipment to Meets All Requirements

HBM offers a wide range of weighing technology products for safe and reliable control of fill quantities; for example, the easy-to-clean PW25 load cellor thehygienic PW27 version for aseptic filling. Both products were specifically developed for use in the food industry. All HBM load cells with ATEX certification are ideally suited for monitoring the filling of flammable liquids and gases. In addition, many HBM products can be directly integrated with the machine control; for example, digital load cells with integrated electronics, or analog load cells with analog output signal or digital interface in combination with external amplifiers. HBM's digital, hermetically sealed FIT®/5 load cell can be safely used in moist environments, and  ensures that fill weight is always consistent.
