Temperature Compensation: How to Get the Right Measurement Data

Temperature compensation is crucial when measuring strain with Fiber Bragg Grating based sensors. Why? Because material properties behave differently when in diverse temperatures. Therefore, a Fiber Bragg Grating sensor that is subjected to both strain and temperature, is also influenced by the temperature change.

Without compensation, the measured strain values include not only the mechanical loading effects but also the effects of temperature – on the structure itself and on the strain sensor. This effect is easy to compensate. But nevertheless, the importance of careful data analysis is obvious.
