FiberSensing was founded in April 2004 as a spin-off from R&D Institute INESCTEC Porto (Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto). It is a result of more than 20 years of research from a world renowned research group in the area of optical fiber sensors.
The company emerged when four researchers (Luís Ferreira, Francisco Araújo, Alberto Maia and José Luís Santos) decided to transfer the technology of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors from the lab to the market.
After a first round of investment (2004), the company spent one year developing a number of sensors and measurement units to address different monitoring applications, at the time mainly oriented to the Construction market (SHM – Structural Health Monitoring).
After this development phase, a second round of investment gave the company the necessary means to start the industrialization phase.
By that time (2005), the company settled its own facilities at Maia, Porto, and begun implementing its corporate image.
Since then, FiberSensing is proud of having addressed hundreds of different monitoring projects around the world and delivered thousands of sensors and measurement units.
In 2010, the company obtained the ISO certification (NP EN 9001:2008) as a result of its commitment to ensure the highest level of Innovation, Quality and Reliability in design, development, production, distribution and servicing.
Being a pioneer in this area, FiberSensing quickly gained success, having evolved into a leading producer and provider of optical Fiber Bragg Grating sensors based systems for multiple applications.
It has become a well-established reference in the market, with several distinctions along the way.
As for October 1st 2014, FiberSensing was acquired by HBM Test and Measurement and today it concentrates all optical sensing activity of HBM.
