Measuring residual stress with HBM

Residual stresses influence the strength properties of components. For obtaining the desired material properties, it is often essential to know the residual stress state at specific points of the component - and thus to measure it.

Residual stress analysis using the hole drilling method

For many years, HBM has cooperated with SINT Technology, a renowned Italian supplier of measurement and analysis software for determining residual stresses using the hole drilling method. The system uses a high-speed drilling machine (350,000 revolutions/min) specially developed for these measurements. A stepper motor automatically moves the tool to different defined drilling depths. PC-controlled measurement guarantees high reproducibility and reliability of measurement.

The process of residual stress measurement

It is relatively easy to take measurements on metal test samples. Depending on the material, measurements on plastics and compounds are also possible on request. In addition, the latest generation of tried and tested EVAL software allows different mathematical algorithms to be compared and thus to find the calculation approach that best matches the respective application. This enables simplified approaches assuming that mechanical stress propagates uniformly through the borehole depth to be compared with approaches assuming non-uniform propagation per ASTM standard E837-13a. Depending on the test sample, the Schwarz-Kockelmann coefficients method might be better suited than the integral method according to Schajer. Three-dimensional views mapping principal stress and angle over the drilling depth facilitate data evaluation.

Moreover, our engineers use the latest generation of residual-stress strain gauges for quickly and reliably documenting measurement results. Besides strain gauges with three measuring grids, versions with six or eight grids are also available, for example, for compensating the effects of eccentricity (borehole centricity).

On completion of a residual stress measurement taken in our laboratories or on site at your premises, you receive a comprehensive test report where all measurement data is clearly presented.
