TROPPER is an internationally active company in Austria that builds silo containers for free-flowing, powdery and granular bulk materials. Tropper strengths lie in individual transport and mixing vehicles with on board weighing systems. The integrated on board scale must be legal-for-trade, reliable, robust and durable.
On board weighing: Determining weight at any time and any place
Delivery tours are more economical in vehicles with an on board weighing system as the precise quantity ordered can be loaded and delivered for each customer. Continuous documentation is required by the strict provisions in the food and animal feed industries. TROPPER's onboard weighing system is available with EU calibration class III and logs the relevant delivery data, complying with the QA system requirements. Operators of mobile milling, crushing and mixing systems must implement this QA inspection since 1st July 2007 in order to supply companies that are integrated in the QA system. This applies to nearly 100% of companies in Germany, for instance.
The challenges of on board weighing
The on board scale is positioned below the respective container framework. Vibrations and impacts during transport are the biggest dangers for the load cells. Then there are rain, snow, cold, heat, dirt and high-pressure cleaning. Rough conditions for a weigher that needs to record weights ranging in the tonnes with a kilogram range resolution, and that needs to be legal-for-trade, reproducible and precise in any container position.
The solution: HBM's RTN load cell
The core of the on board scales are several ring-torsion load cells. The HBM RTN C3 load cell was the type selected. Josef Vogl, responsible at TROPPER for technology and manufacturer vehicle initial verification, is extremely satisfied:

Ring-torsion load cell RTN – Versatile by design
- The output resistance is, with 4k Ohm, very high-impedance, therefore uses very little current. The RTN is thereby perfect for battery-operated mobile applications.
- The annular strain gages react to loads from all directions. The RTN also records loads that would be missed by a rod-shaped load cell.
- With 2.85mV/V, the RTN has a very high output signal, and therefore a greater signal to noise ratio and very high accuracy.
