Seminar: Fundamental Principles of Electrical Engineering for Non-Electrical Engineers
Two Day Seminar Various Locations Level: Starter
Modern measurement technology is based on analog and digital electronics. Understanding the basic principles of electrical engineering is therefore necessary to make optimum use of your metrological instruments.
For example, you should be familiar with the differences between direct and alternating current circuits, resistances in series and parallel circuits, and also be able to calculate frequency spectra of different signal forms.
Typically, about 50% of the participants in our measurement technology seminars are non-electrical engineers, who often feel very unsure of these topics. We have therefore designed this special seminar for you, to make it easier for you to get started in the unfamiliar and perhaps unpopular world of electrical engineering.
The goal of this seminar is to help you gain an understanding of some of the fundamental relationships in electrical engineering. The emphasis is on topics that are useful for using and understanding measurement technology products. It is not intended to replace any specific metrological seminars but rather to lay the groundwork to help give you a deeper understanding of measurement technology and to enhance your confidence.
Seminar content:
- Fundamental methods of measurement for current and voltage. Simple direct current circuits
- Input and output resistance of measuring amplifiers
- Work and power: Correlation of mechanical quantities with the corresponding electrical quantities
- The electrical oscillating circuit, transfer function
- Basic principles for selecting suitable measuring leads (coil and capacitor for alternating voltage)
- How to consider various signals (transient, periodic, …)
- Different signal forms of alternating voltage signals (sine, mixed signals, square wave, etc.), frequency spectra, rated outputs (arithmetic mean, rectified value, root mean square value), signal bandwidth, sample rate
- Change in the signal over time in digital data transmission (pulses, level, threshold, clock, etc.)
- Other electrical specifications of amplifiers, for example measurements referenced to ground vs. differential measurements, common-mode voltage, noise, signal-to-noise ratio, the dB unit.
Target group: Technical oriented users from areas other than electrical engineering.
Prior knowledge: None.
