This is possible because of the electronic data sheet that stores all relevant transducer data on a chip as standard. The amplifier reads the data and automatically makes the correct settings - and measurement with the correct units can start immediately without any further user interaction. Smart on site - TEDS in short

TEDS stands for the smart transducer (Transducer Electronic DataSheet) that comes with all the information required for its identification on a small memory chip as standard (e.g. manufacturer number, transducer type, serial number, calibration date, measuring point). Transducers without an integrated memory chip, too, can be easily upgraded with TEDS in the transducer cable or connector. Modern measuring systems use a standard protocol to read the information saved on the chip for configuring the amplifiers.

The identified transducer automatically configures the measuring system and enables the measured value to be quickly forwarded to the visualization or process level. This provides users with substantial advantages: TEDS brings about a considerable gain of time and quality - especially with frequently changing test and measurement tasks in test bench environments. Meanwhile, many companies have realized: Using smart transducers opens up interesting opportunities to increase efficiency. However, standard technologies such as IEEE1451 (TEDS) have not become widely established so far. Nonetheless, they provide the perfect answer to the challenges posed by increasingly complex systems and consistently high quality requirements in the testing environment. TEDS is a key technology ensuring continuous, smart data flow (time, quality, traceability) - covering sensor, signal conditioning, data recording, automation system, and smart data management. Therefore, introducing smart data flow or changing over to "Advanced Plug and Measure" is a promising project.

How to introduce TEDS in an efficient and profitable way

Three parties are involved in successfully introducing TEDS in measurement technology: Firstly, any objections of actual users, for example, test bench engineers, need to be thoroughly eliminated. The opportunities and advantages provided by TEDS (total cost of ownership, investment versus gain of time) need to be presented to decision makers in a comprehensible way. Then investments can be made for TEDS and existing processes can be adapted. This also means instructing suppliers accordingly.

System integrators, for example, test bench manufacturers need to standardize a concept for smart data flow. In addition, they need to provide the corresponding interfaces and tools. Manufacturers of data acquisition systems, too, will have to contribute: As consultants during the introduction of TEDS who clearly point out the opportunities offered by this technology and implement the required mechanisms.

Different requirements of test bench engineers demand reliable transducer identification: An unambiguous code together with a central database is the most efficient solution. For this purpose, TEDS needs to store a bulk of information - a text-based approach, e.g. XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) provides maximum benefit. In general, it is now up to the parties involved to create a consistent commitment.
