Plug in and get started – TEDS: Plug and Measure using transducer identification

Plug and Play has long since become a standard in PC technology. Now it has found its way into professional test and measurement. HBM was actively involved in the development of electronic transducer identification using TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) which provides a technology that enables test and measurement engineers to take precise measurements in only 30 seconds.

However, Plug and Measure offers more than just being able to ‘plug in and get started’. Measuring with TEDS ensures easy and quick configuration of measurement chains and, in addition, reliable values for every measurement – even with frequently changing measurement configurations and tasks or large numbers of connected transducers.

For this purpose, the major characteristics of a transducer are stored inside it in the form of an electronic data sheet. The amplifier can import this data and automatically convert it into the right settings. It then gets on with measuring straight away, in the correct units, with no further efforts on the user’s part.

Wherever complex measurements and measurements with frequently changing configurations and tasks are taken or test and measurement components are integrated into complex machines, TEDS now promises easier and faster measurement with absolutely reliable results for maximum certainty. TEDS shows its strengths in development laboratories, in manufacturing and production monitoring, and in vehicle development as well as in calibration using reference transducers and in commissioned measurement tasks which service providers carry out on their customer’s premises. And in all situations where simpler handling and increased certainty are required.

Smart solution: HBM’s zero wire technology

HBM uses standard cable with all transducers with feedback line (strain gage transducers in 6-wire configuration, inductive transducers and PT100 resistance thermometers) for transmitting the TEDS data, too. No additional cable cores are needed. This enables intelligent switching (patent pending) between the analog measure mode and the digital identification mode.

Connectors and cables are identical; therefore, TEDS-compatible components can be combined with conventional technique. Existing transducers can easily be upgraded without any additional wiring.

What is stored in the TEDS memory?

The TEDS chip saves only data that describes the transducer itself: Transducer type, manufacturer and ID in the basic range per IEEE1451.4 standard. The second memory area stores data specified by the manufacturer. Templates are provided for the principal data. These templates comply with the standard and are uniformly interpreted by different amplifiers, for example, measurement quantities, measuring ranges or characteristics. The third area is described by the user, for example, filter settings, zero signal, and a short comment – HBM provides a TEDS editor for writing in.

HBM offers TEDS with new transducers, upgrading of existing transducers with TEDS at HBM, TEDS modules for upgrading different transducers, also from other manufacturers, the TEDS editor for programming of TEDS modules, and amplifiers for reading TEDS data.


TEDS is defined in the IEEE 1451.4 standard published at the end of 2004. HBM was actively involved in the development of this standard and is among the test and measurement pioneers who are successfully implementing TEDS in their products already today.
